Living Smart 2025 - Saturday 20th September

Cushion Giveaway

Upcycle Newcastle will create a dramatic mountain of 400kg of textile waste as striking symbol of the environmental impact of fashion. This textile waste will be used to fill upcycled denim floor cushions, diverting that waste from landfill.  Fifteen attendees per hour will be able to earn a floor cushion, (worth $80) to take home by correcting filling in the Upcycle Newcastle Quiz.

Fast Fashion education

An evocative installation of clothing-shaped posters on hangers, each outlining the environmental cost of producing various garments. Upcycle Newcastle facilitators will guide discussions with visitors, sparking critical conversations around fashion consumption, sustainability and the circular economy.

Creative Upcycling Workshops for All Ages

Children will enjoy crafting their own dog toys using yarn made from recycled t-shirts—a fun and simple way to learn about sustainability. Meanwhile, adults can take part in hands-on workshops to create beautiful denim feathers and upcycled denim jewelry to take home. These workshops offer a chance for all ages to explore creative reuse and take practical steps toward reducing textile waste.
